Finding Your Authentic Self: An interview with Dr Ayse Meltem Budak
What does it mean to be ‘authentic’?
How can someone discover their authentic self?
Reconnecting with oneself is pivotal in this journey. It begins by cultivating awareness of our five senses but recognizing and acknowledging our emotions is the real essence. Can you accurately discern your current state of being? What emotional state are you willing to embrace and express? Authenticity requires aligning our inner truth with our outward expression. Pretending to be content with something we’re not comfortable with hinders authenticity. Understanding the distinction between what we genuinely feel and what we show is crucial. By delving into our emotional landscape, we unlock the key to authenticity – establishing a genuine connection with our emotions.
Amidst external pressures, such as societal expectations molded by childhood conditioning, media influences, and cultural norms dictating how we should express ourselves as parents, partners, or professionals, how can we recognize what feels truly authentic?
In today's world, many individuals find themselves drifting away from their authentic selves or feeling like they've lost touch with their true essence. So, how can one reclaim their authenticity and realign with their genuine self?
In today’s world, many individuals find themselves drifting away from their authentic selves or feeling like they’ve lost touch with their true essence. So, how can one reclaim their authenticity and realign with their genuine self?
The first step is cultivating a deeper connection with your emotions and body. Start by simply observing your body. When your mind begins to wander, caught up in thoughts, plans, and responsibilities, gently invite yourself back to the present moment. Observe how you walk and hold your posture – consciously reconnecting with your physical self. As you do so, become aware of the feelings and sensations that arise within you.
Name the emotional state you’re experiencing, for emotions always carry messages. Be it negative or positive, there is purpose behind each emotion. For instance, anger or guilt may surface, revealing moments when you weren’t true to yourself. Acknowledge these emotions and allow them to be expressed effectively. Understand that even though you made mistakes, suffering is a choice. Embrace the truth, learn from it, apologize if necessary, and reflect and journal. Discover techniques to regulate and soothe your emotions mindfully.
Engaging in meditation practices can be immensely helpful as well. You can observe your gut feelings, thoughts, and instincts through meditation. This reflective process allows you to delve deeper into your authentic self. Interestingly, authenticity embraces duality both within yourself and about others. It is within the delicate balance of this duality that enlightenment, wisdom, and genuine connections thrive.
Rediscovering authenticity, engaging with others, and remembering that life isn’t solely about ourselves are vital. Contributing to others and extending a helping hand allows us to become part of something greater than ourselves. In this act of giving, we assist others and heal ourselves.
Our brains are wired to connect with others, as research shows that the release of oxytocin, the “love hormone,” is heightened when we give to others rather than keep it to ourselves. However, it’s essential to maintain a sense of balance in our interactions, avoiding overextending ourselves or isolating ourselves in solitude.
In your journey toward authenticity, embrace the beauty of self-discovery, connect with your emotions, and foster meaningful connections with others. By doing so, you’ll embark on a path of fulfillment, wisdom, and a genuine relationship with yourself and the world around you.
Remember, authenticity is a lifelong journey of self-discovery and growth. Embrace the process, honor your emotions, and continuously explore what it means to be your true, authentic self.
